This program is perfect for students looking for an experience that’s more than just learning English. The program explores the thematic program focus while at the same time providing an opportunity for increasing language proficiency for those who want to improve their English.
Participants make new friends from around the world and engage with them in understanding more about their world. When they leave, they’ll be ready to pursue their dreams and change the world for the better! Weekly themes and the accompanying activities are designed specifically to increase competency in topics beyond English Language Learning. During these theme-based experiences, students have an opportunity to identify personal passions and work toward greater global understanding.
The program is held at California State University, San Marcos, located in San Marcos, approximately 35 miles north of downtown San Diego. This is a very large and popular university campus and, as a bonus, is about 15 miles to the Pacific Ocean! AFS participants are housed in dormitory flats with other students of their gender. The typical CSUSM dormitory suite is for 8 students (4 bedrooms x 2 students),
Morning Classes: Classes have weekly themes that build English Language competency and relate directly to the local excursions and activities of the week.
Afternoons & Evenings: During the afternoons, students have a variety of fun activities (held onsite) and excursions (offsite). Some of the excursions include popular destinations like Disneyland, local California beaches for surf lessons, San Diego’s Old Town, Oceanside Beach and Pier, La Jolla Cove, San Diego Safari Park, Balboa Park, and more.
The participation fee covers all meals, transportation in the USA, and excursions (transport and admission fees for Disneyland, etc.). Students will only need money for souvenirs or to purchase snacks and/or food and drinks that aren’t part of the meal service.
